Welcome to the hermitage at shap

Part of the long history of Shap and built in the traditional style of the Jacobean era the Hermitage provides the opportunity to stay in a traditional home with some of the modern to provide the comfort required today with touches of the unusual/unique.  The date stone above the door indicates that the house dates back to 1691 but there is evidence there was a much older dwelling, other architectural changes in the 1840`s result in the present building.

The Jackson family have been here since 1967 and have treasured it as a home and extended the hospitality of the house to passers by for 58 years.

Garden Serenity & a Breakfast to Remember

Guest are welcome to share the beautiful garden famous for the well tended borders and lawns.

Breakfasts are served in  what is the oldest part of the house.  The offer includes fresh fruit salad, yoghurt, seasonal compotes and homemade museli, to start.  Any combinations of bacon, sausage, black pudding, hash browns tomatoes, mushrooms and eggs of any description.  Teas of choice are available, our coffee grounds come from Farrers of Kendal specialist since 1790. We use their Westmorland blend.

Conveniently Located Between Lakes, Fells & Borders

For walkers on Wainwrights Coast to Coast Walk we are conveniently placed on the right, just after entering the main part of the village. No better place after a hard days walk over the tops from Patterdale.

For those touring with a car and wanting a base, we are within 40 minutes of the central Lake District, the Roman Wall, the North Yorkshire National Park and the Eden Valley.  We are also conveniently placed to break the long journey from the south of England to Scotland

Shap - Stepping stone to Lakes and Fells

Situated on what was once the main road to the North the village regained a sense of peace when it was bypassed by the M6 1978.   The village benefits from the easy access to the motorway but once you leave at J39 you are within minutes of some of the out of the way places in both the Lake District and North Yorkshire National Parks.

There  is evidence of a long history of settlement in the Parish. There are the remains of an Iron Age Fort.  There are strong links with the Norse people who populated nearby valleys and left their culture in our local dialect.  Premonstrastensian Canons chose the land by the river Lowther to build their Abbey. Later ages brought changes with the coming of the Railway,  which has always been an attraction to enthusiasts who often line the tracks when the regular Steam Trains go by on their summer excursions.

Discover the Hidden Valleys of Shap

The parish abounds with footpaths and much time can be spent in the beautiful valleys of Swindale Mardale and Wet Sleddale.  Ideal for a long weekends walking.  Being on the edge of the Lake District the area offers a remote and less crowded place to be while enjoying the rugged beauty of the surroundings.

Services available include a Village Store, Two pubs, Fish and Chip restaurant, Café, Open Air Swimming Pool (May to September)  a Heritage Centre and a Doctors Surgery.
